What it means to be an artist

I think it’s something I’ve always been. I think it is something we all are.

From the very beginning of creation, we were made to be like Him. Made in the image of God, The master creator, the most care-filled artist, the most intentional friend.

We were made to tend, to care for the created world. Because we reflect the creator, we are given the gift of creativity - called to fill the earth with beauty.

There is beauty in all of the rooms. Even when grief comes knocking at the door. Maybe even, especially in those times. In awe of God, we learn to see. And in seeing, we believe.

I catch a glimpse of it in the clouds, in the sound of my friends laughter, in the drawings I kept from a kindergartener, in the quiet of the mornings and the loudness of a full table for dinner. To create is to close to the Father - To linger in his likeness and the safety of his shadow.

The work of an artist is the challenge of being present, being attentive to the spirit, learning to sit with mystery and wonder.

"If anything good and beautiful is happening, God is on the loose and in the room"
